Derrida Obits

hola,

I read the NYTimes obit with amazement - I mean the Times wrote on Derrida fairly often & had writers that could have said interesting things about him, but instead they ran this really lame obit.

However, I just read something by Spivak in Artforum that was really good - it covered most of his life & works, it was heartfelt, it did not engage in too much idolotry & it reminded me how much I miss the man.

thanks

I have not read the obituary, but judging by the letters in this site you referenced, Jerrold, it sounds entirely inadequate.

This is the second black eye for NYT obits in the last year. The first and perhaps-worse belongs to their mendacious and shameful obituary of Gary Webb.

if i can find the text of the obit, i'll post it...

to say briefly...the obit chose to focus on things like the paul de man affair, & derrida's defense of de man (going to far as to accuse, no matter how obliquely, derrida of being a self-hating jew)...

read more like a uninspired dragging through the dirt of derrida than it did an overview of his life & work...
