Mon, August 23, 2004 - 5:31 PMShocking and disappointing. I believe it was Nabokov who likened translation to bringing in the head of a text on a platter.
I wish this was the exception, rather than the rule. I remember comparing Gadamer's Truth and Method with the original German in a seminar, and finding some truly staggering omissions.
