Re: Chomsky vs. Foucault on YouTube
Mon, June 4, 2007 - 8:45 PMheya barnaby,
just noticed that very debate is used as an introduction for The Foucault Reader ...on pantheon? books...
( and if yur on the foucault tribe that link was posted there as well without much discussion )
yep, that clip gave me a pretty good picture of the schism between those who go for the juggular /root of the problem ( foucault)
and those who try establish a practical platform in fighting oppression... (chomsky, anarchist syndicalism ) ...
in a very very boiled down sense it seemed to characterize the typical french intellect vs. the moral american ... and if only the 2 positions could coordinate an attack simultaneously from both sides in brightly colored spandex tights i think they might have a chance of taking down the empire... at least for one round.

Re: Chomsky vs. Foucault on YouTube
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 5:58 PMWow - thanks! There's a lot more there.
It's interesting to note how hard the moderator tries to set these two at odds, but they keep agreeing with each other.
It's also astonishing to me to see how philosophically astute Chomsky is, and how thoroughly Foucault understood Chomsky's work. These are really two colossi. -

Re: Chomsky vs. Foucault on YouTube
Tue, June 5, 2007 - 6:04 PMyeah, i've been hearing about this debate for years, but this is the first time i've actually encountered it. i have to say, it does seem a lot more genial than i'd always heard.
they are pretty amazing-- i certainly rate chomsky and foucault among the most interesting/important/influential thinkers of the 20th century, -
