Paul Ricoeur was one of my patron saints. Fortunately, I did get to speak with him on numerous occasions at Chicago, he had a position at the Divinity School there on the Committee for Social Thought. He was just incredible to speak with. He was, dare I say, almost "angelic" in the way he approached things. I read all of his books and in particular, "Time and Narrative" is extraordinary. God I hate that he passed. What I also found amazing was that Ricoeur was a Christian, one whose Christianity was quite lucid and very much unlike the evangelical stuff passed of for Christianity. One of the first books on phenomenology I read was Ricoeur's work on "The Symbolism of Evil". When I was doing phenomenology, Marx and Freud were heavily discussed and Ricoeur was very much involved in this dynamic(this was during the early seventies). It seems all of my heroes are dropping like flies: Ossie Davis, Jacques Derrida, and now Paul Ricoeur. This has been such an ugly time for me(2000-=2005), the worst in my life, and I hate what America has become and is becoming. And the evangelical right I hate with all my heart. We have lost a great patron of humanity. May we all honor him by not forgetting what he thought and why he thought the war for humanity, for philosophy will always be important.
